Hybrid Energy Systems Bring Efficiency to Army Posts
The Army’s Rapid Equipping Force provides game-changing technologies for greater effectiveness and survivability in the field. Their Energy to the Tactical Edge (E2E) program focuses on reducing the energy footprint at Army posts in Afghanistan.
Through the E2E program, Alion aimed to improve the reliability of power while lowering fuel consumption. Alion engineers reconfigured existing power generators and replaced fleets of inefficient generators with self-sufficient, hybrid energy systems that selectively draw from the most appropriate power source, including solar, wind, battery and conventional generators.
As a result, upgraded aid stations, remotely-operated weapons stations, mobile kitchens and surveillance towers are using solar-hybrid power with essentially 100% reliability. Plus, the fuel savings at installations have averaged 20 to 80 gallons per day, the equivalent of two to eight air shipments of fuel per month.
