Protecting Essential Satellite Data Links

NOAA

The Fairbanks Command and Data Acquisition Station (FCDAS) captures climate and weather data from polar-orbiting and geostationary environmental satellites and is an essential facility of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). But, when a commercial gold mining venture’s proposed mineral assessment activities on nearby land had the potential to unintentionally interfere with the sensitive NOAA satellite receiver operations, a team of Alion radio-frequency (RF) engineers was deployed.

Armed with a portable measurement and data collection system, the engineers measured and characterized the RF emissions from more than 60 pieces of mining equipment. After a thorough analysis, recommendations were made to reduce the risk of interference to FCDAS, thus protecting NOAA’s mission.

The Alion team’s rapid response, RF expertise and experience with NOAA systems will allow both NOAA and the gold mining mineral assessment activities to co-exist.
